Long Conifer Hedge Trimmed for £200, Near River

Tall hedges have a way of defeating the people who own them. This one, a long conifer hedge in a garden near River, needed its sides and top trimming back. We cut both, and the job came to £200.
Where DIY goes wrong
We are not against people cutting their own hedges. For a low hedge it is a perfectly reasonable weekend job. But a tall conifer is different, and the problems are always the same.
The first is the top. You cannot see what you are cutting, you cannot reach it comfortably, and a trimmer held above your head is heavy and tiring. The second is the ladder. Gardens are rarely level, lawns are soft, and a ladder on soft ground is how most hedge-cutting accidents begin. The third is the waste. A long hedge produces a surprising volume of clippings, and getting rid of them is a job in itself.
How we do it
We agree the price and the finished line before we start, so there is no guessing. The right kit for the height means the top gets a proper level cut rather than a series of scalloped dips. We work along the hedge in sections, sides first and then the top, and we clear up as we go.
What a trim is, and what it is not
This was a trim of sides and top. That is a simple, quick job on a hedge that has been kept reasonably up to date. If a hedge has been left for several years, or if cutting it back means going into old wood, that is a different job with a different price, and we will tell you before we start rather than after. Conifers in particular do not always grow back from old wood, so it matters to get that conversation right.
The result
A long, neat conifer hedge with clean sides and a level top. The garden looks bigger and the hedge looks cared for. The photo shows how it finished.
